Our Solarpunk Island Story
During the 2023/24 academic year, we proudly launched the BGE Solarpunk Island pilot, with over 38 primary and secondary schools from 18 local authorities participating. This innovative project encouraged students to explore the imaginative world of Solarpunk, blending sustainability with futuristic creativity. The program focused on developing essential skills such as creative thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration, inspiring pupils to envision a more hopeful, sustainable future.
In January, students from Dedridge Primary and West Calder High School came together to share their experiences working on Solarpunk Island. Younger pupils had the unique opportunity to collaborate with older peers, allowing them to think creatively and build on skills that will aid their progression from primary to secondary education. This cross-school partnership fostered a sense of community and mentorship among learners.

In February, S3 pupils at Portobello High School in Edinburgh embarked on their own Solarpunk Island adventure. Over two engaging days, students were "marooned" on the island and faced a series of challenges designed to enhance creative thinking while integrating lessons from various subjects. This immersive scenario-based experience encouraged them to apply their knowledge in new and exciting ways, fostering both teamwork and independent problem-solving skills.
